IPC

An instrument proficiency check (IPC) is required if an instrument rated pilot who fails to maintain recency experience as outlined by FAR 61.57(c) and who intends to act as pilot-in-command (PIC) of an aircraft while under IFR or night SVFR.  While FAR 61.57(d) does not stipulated a minimum time requirement for the IPC, you can expect the IPC to consist of at least 1 hour of ground review and 2 hours of flight time.

The instrument rating is not an “all weather license,” the CFII’s endorsement for instrument privileges attests that the pilot has the knowledge and skills to operate safely in instrument meteorological conditions during all stages of flight.  Weather is still the factor that most likely to result in aviation accidents and fatalities.  To ensure that the IPC serves its intended purposes, FAR 61.57 and the Airmen Certification Standards (ACS) for Instrument Rating Airplane, outline the minimum required areas of operations to be covered during the IPC.  All areas of operation shall be evaluated to the current ACS in effect at the time of the IPC.
